Explore Your Shore
JUNE Rockpool Report
Biodiversity In The Pools, Grattan Beach, Galway.
While we can expect to find similar species every month, June was quite special as it has thrown up some very interesting questions and mysteries!
Mystery 1
So, while cleaning around some drift seaweed we found HUNDREDS of these species under the sand (one of them flew away, so they are winged species). During beach cleans we often leave the plastic bags on the sand, and after an hour cleaning when I lifted the bag, the heat must have drawn them up, as there were about 50 of them under the bag?
We have NO IDEA how they thrive in this harsh environment?
Mystery 2
For the last few months we have been taking hundreds of photos of the progress of the sand fence project in Grattan. Over the last few weeks we have seen a unique battle between the yellow and white species (Mustard and Sea Rocket) in the dunes.
Our knowledge of Coastal Flora is very limited, so we hope to learn more about this interplay of biodiversity on the dune system.
I think June was another fantastic Explore Your Shore Experience, and it has shown that the beach still has a hundred more mysteries to solve……it is a lot of fun exploring and learning all the time.
