Become an Observer of the Shore: Galway Atlantaquaria are proud to launch Clean Coasts Observer Experiences

Galway Atlantaquaria, in partnership with Clean Coasts and the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s Explore Your Shore! campaign Is calling on the public to become a Clean Coasts Observer.

This new Clean Coasts Observer experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the local coastline, learn more about our biodiversity, how to record it, and PROTECT our Coastlines from Marine Litter.

“Three for the Sea – Explore, Observe & Discover” initiative combines education, conservation, and wellbeing. Participants are invited to join the Aquarium for guided biodiversity walks along the shore that transform into a data-gathering expedition.

These authentic experiences explore the hidden worlds of our coastal environments, featuring:

  • Explorations of dune systems and coastal flora.
  • “Biofact” treasure hunts to discover the secrets of marine life.
  • Interactive lessons on how sand shapes our coastline.
  • Insights into coastal culture and heritage.
  • Mindfulness sessions by the sea to promote wellbeing.
  • Surveys of intertidal biodiversity, from fish, crabs to anemones.

The Science Behind the Shoreline

Explore Your Shore! is a national citizen science project focused on building a comprehensive picture of marine species around the Irish coast. The data collected during these walks helps scientists understand the impacts of climate change and water quality on marine habitats.

Garry Kendellen, speaking for Galway Atlantaquaria, said “By becoming a Clean Coasts Observers, local people aren’t just learning about nature; they are actively contributing vital data to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. This information directly informs national conservation efforts and environmental policy. Every species we record and every piece of litter we log makes a tangible difference in protecting our coastline.”

Why Take Part?

The programme is designed to be a holistic experience, offering benefits that go beyond conservation:

Social Connection: Meet a community of like-minded nature lovers working together to make a positive impact.

Wellbeing: Reap the mental and physical health benefits of time spent by the sea.

Environmental Impact: Help strengthen national biodiversity data and protect our marine ecosystems.

The experience is suitable for all ages and requires no prior scientific knowledge—just a willingness to learn and get involved.

Accessibility & Physical Requirements

Due to the natural beach environment, this experience involves walking on soft sand and uneven terrain. Participants should feel comfortable moving independently across unstable surfaces.

Unfortunately, the location is not currently accessible for wheelchairs or mobility aids.

If you have specific access needs, please contact us in advance and we will be happy to discuss whether the experience is suitable.
