World Ocean Day Banners

New Art Display at Galway Atlantaquaria

Over the last two years the aquarium has displayed the work of local artists and creators in a large front window of the aquarium office and this year they would like to offer the space to students and educators.

‘We were delighted by the response from local artists to our call for displaying their work in 2022 and 2023’ said Petra Kerkhove from the aquarium, and after receiving several requests from schools and educators last year we decided to change tack in 2024 and showcase this type of work.

Galway Atlantaquaria

inspiring projects over the coming months. For the month of May we are delighted to present two banners that the 4th and 5th class pupils of Bawnmore NS in Claregalway made while exploring nature and ecology.

The project was part of the Galway Education Centre BLAST School and Artist Residency where they had the opportunity to work with artist Kathy Ross. The children worked together to create a marine scene, using fabric collage, embroidery, painting and drawing.

‘It was great fun and enjoyable. Cool to figure out how to sew and then add my pieces onto the tapestry. I enjoyed working in my group and presenting it to the whole school.’

‘I enjoyed completing the art and how much we were involved in putting together the tapestry. The positive messages we included inspire us every day and we had great fun putting them together.’

‘Using paint as well as all the different fabrics showed me how enjoyable it is to work with different materials and how creative we can be.’

Be sure to drop by the aquarium to see these banners on display throughout the month in the front window of the aquarium office, to celebrate the run up to World Ocean Day on the 8th of June.
