Marine Education Matters: Why Ocean Awareness in Education is Important

Introduction

For over 25 years Galway Atlantaquaria has been delivering a host of unique marine education workshops by the beautiful ‘Outdoor Classroom’ we call the seashore. Working with groups of all ages and abilities, we have delivered workshops on Marine Litter and fun and engaging activities like Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

We depend on the ocean for so much and we believe it is really important to have a deeper connection with the hidden life under the sea.

Our Seashore Safaris are our most popular fieldwork activities and when we explore the shore, we can share our passion for marine life on the shore and teach young people about how we are all connected.

The benefits of outdoor education are well-established and include:

  • It improves academic achievement
  • It provides a bridge to higher-order learning
  • It makes learning more engaging and relevant
  • It nurtures creativity
  • It reduces behaviour problems and improves attendance
  • It stimulates, inspires, and improves motivation
  • It improves young people’s attitudes to learning.

If you wish to learn about the sea then the Aquarium is the only place to learn, Galway Atlantaquaria offers a tailored and specific education programme for both Primary and Post Primary Learners in Galway City and County. We have even met young people from Mayo, and Clare.

Why Ocean Awareness in Education is important

There is no doubt that the ocean has many challenges with Marine Litter, Climate Change, and Ocean Acidification, yet the Aquarium and its Team of educators promote positivity and creativity in their work on ocean awareness and its teaching.

We love this quote by Alexandra K.Trenfor sums up some of our main ethos in education.

The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see.”

Enabling and empowering young people to learn about ocean literacy is a common good, and it is a joy to share with others, and our education team are really friendly, passionate, and fun to be around.

Marine Education Matters, and so do you.

Education and outreach are provided In-house

We deliver in-house education and outreach and are part of several school programmes, including SFI Curious Minds, and the Explorers Education Programme, funded by the Marine Institute. We can deliver through English or as Gaeilge and have experience providing teacher and pre-service teacher workshops, and the Aistear Curriculum.
